Transport is at the heart of our net zero future. From rolling out hundreds of thousands of EV chargepoints to decarbonising global shipping, the sector depends on trusted data sharing to unlock investment, coordinate infrastructure, and reduce emissions across value chains.
The UK has committed to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2030. Forecasts suggest that at least 280,000 to 480,000 public chargepoints will be needed, more than 10 times the current number. Data infrastructure is the missing layer between policy ambition and infrastructure delivery.
IB1 partnered with the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to identify the data infrastructure needed to roll out thousands more EV chargepoints across the UK. More than 30% of households cannot install at-home chargepoints, making on-street public charging essential and the data challenge acute.
Local authorities need data on household parking, pavement widths, existing chargepoint utilisation, journey patterns, and predicted EV demand to plan on-street charging efficiently and equitably. Much of this data is fragmented or unavailable.
With 49+ different chargepoint operators, drivers currently need a proprietary app for each. Operators have limited incentive to share data on location, availability, speed of charge, and reliability. Mandating open data standards would transform the consumer experience.
Early EV adoption is concentrated in affluent areas. Without data-driven planning, infrastructure rollout risks deepening a rich/poor divide. IB1’s use case work highlights the need for social clauses and equitable distribution.
EV charging intersects with the energy grid: DNOs need to understand assets on their network, smart charging requires carbon intensity data, and bidirectional vehicle-to-grid services need standardised data flows.
IB1 partnered with Lloyd’s Register to research how trusted data sharing can drive investment in net zero shipping. The maritime sector needs end-to-end visibility of asset performance at every stage: rail, lorries, cranes, ships, and port systems. An end-to-end view enables shippers to understand and respond to the carbon impact of individual shipments.
Understanding performance of existing assets through pollution assessments shows what to replace and what measures can reduce carbon impact. The technology infrastructure is often old and inefficient.
Shippers need data on the carbon footprint of their entire logistics chain. IB1’s Provenance Records and Trust Framework provide the governance infrastructure for verified, cross-border data sharing.
At COP26 in 2021, IB1 founder Gavin Starks delivered the keynote for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) partnership with Catena-X Automotive Network, representing 62 automotive industry members, to develop a shared approach to measuring and exchanging Scope 3 carbon emissions information in automotive supply chains.
Catena-X brings together major automotive manufacturers and suppliers to standardise carbon emissions data across supply chains, partnered with the Rocky Mountain Institute.
Automotive supply chains span dozens of countries. IB1’s Trust Framework approach enables standardised data sharing without centralising sensitive commercial data, maintaining data sovereignty for each participant.
IB1’s BEIS Green Economy research identified multiple high-priority transport use cases where Smart Data can unlock net zero outcomes.
