- Sell data – IB1 does not buy, sell, or broker data. It creates governance frameworks and technical infrastructure that enable others to share data lawfully and responsibly.
- Centralise data platforms – IB1 does not operate a central data repository or platform. It facilitates decentralised, federated data sharing through open standards and Trust Services. It does provide open source examples of how catalogues can be delivered (e.g. https://opennetzero.org).
- Act as a commercial consultancy – IB1 is not a private consultancy for hire. It is a public benefit company delivering open, non-proprietary governance infrastructure for collective benefit.
- Dictate or enforce policy – IB1 supports the development of policy-aligned frameworks but does not have regulatory authority or enforcement powers. The co-designed Schemes determine how enforcement will work.
- Replace regulators – IB1 works with regulators but does not assume regulatory functions or compete with statutory bodies.
- Build proprietary software products – IB1 supports open source and pre-competitive solutions; it does not develop or sell closed software tools or SaaS products.
- Guarantee access to funding – While IB1 co-develops bids and attracts aligned funders, it does not act as a grant-making or investment body.
- Serve as a general ‘certification’ body – IB1 enables compliance frameworks but does not directly issue or police certifications unless they are explicitly defined within a Scheme.
- Serve only one sector – IB1 is cross-sector by design and does not advocate solely for a single domain or industry interest.
- Own or claim IP over Schemes – IB1 coordinates the creation of Schemes but does not claim ownership over the data or IP created by participants.
