The Open Transport Initiative has joined the Icebreaker Constellation to explore joint opportunities and to accelerate the development of a Trust Framework for Transport:
- the sharing of data across the transport & mobility sector using open data and shared data principles and practices.
- cross-sector development, awareness and adoption of smart data across the transport and mobility sector
- interoperable data to create better environmental outcomes.
The Open Transport Initiative was set up to develop and support the adoption of Open Standards for sharing data across the transport & mobility sector. It aims to:
- Design, publish and manage Application Programme Interfaces (APIs) specifications for transport account interoperability
- Work with governments, local authorities, transport providers, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms, software vendors and other organisations to support the use of Open Standards
- Further the adoption of shared & interoperable (smart) data across all transport modes
What is the Open Transport Initiative?
The Open Transport Initiative was set up by a group from the transport industry and technical specialists with a common interest in data interoperability. They identified that as more transport providers/operators, suppliers and platforms enter the mobility market, an increasing amount of customer data is stored in different proprietary systems.
The idea came from the belief that the customer is in control of their transport data, so therefore mobility accounts should allow the secure sharing of specific data.
Their stated role is to:
- Design, publish and manage the ONLY Application Programme Interface (API) specifications for transport & mobility account interoperability
- Work with governments, local authorities, transport providers, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms, software vendors and other organisations to support the use of Open Standards
- Further the adoption of shared & interoperable (smart) data across all transport modes
They believe that every data producer and publisher in a mobility organisation now has a responsibility to ensure that data is F.A.I.R
- Findable
- Accessible
- Interoperable
- Reusable
Transport Data Interoperability and Net Zero
The transport and mobility sector has a fundamental role in tackling climate change.
In developing and promoting Open Standards for
smart data the Open Transport Initiative recognised that account data interoperability could be used to help inform and change the behaviour of users to minimise the environmental impact caused by the second-largest emitter of Greenhouse gasses (mainly CO2)
